SUMMARY:Live at the Vineyards benefiting KUVO Public Radio Station!
DESCRIPTION:Live at the Vineyards benefiting KUVO Public Radio Station\, Sat\, Aug. 14th\, 1:30PM-after the music has started. 6 volunteers are needed. (This event is now on Waiting List status.  If you sign up you will receive the two automated responses but will only be contacted if we get a volunteer cancellation.) We help first by putting the linens and flowers on the tables. Then we will help the restaurants who are serving food by running some errands for them & helping in the VIP area.  They couldn’t hold the event last year due to COVID.  It is one of our volunteers’ favorite events.  This year the H2 Big Band will play for the first half and The Sam Mayfield Blues Revue will play for the second half.  What great music!  It is a relaxed atmosphere where you will get to interact and have fun with the guests while also listening to music.  You will get to have a great gourmet meal & wine tasting also.  The event is located North Denver at the Balistreri Vineyards.  There is also an auction and dancing.  Good music and fun people for another fantastic local cause!  Cocktail attire!

SUMMARY:Serving Dinner at The Denver Rescue Mission
DESCRIPTION:Serving Dinner at the Denver Rescue Mission\, Thurs. Aug. 5th 4:30–6:30PM\, 5 Volunteers are needed. We will be serving dinner to the homeless in their Downtown facility.  They do have two free parking areas for the volunteers.  For some of the guests\, the meals they serve at the Mission are the only source of nutrition they receive.  They say that “with each healthy meal comes strength to face the new challenges of each day.”  They serve over 600\,000 meals to the hungry each year.  We have helped them several times before\, most recently after the COVD restrictions are lessening\, but they were still very careful to be sure we were socially distanced.  The volunteers truly find this to be a worthwhile experience.

DESCRIPTION:Habitat for Humanity ReStore Donation Drive\, Sat. July 24th\, 8:30AM-11:30AM\, 5 Volunteers are needed. This is a fairly  new experience for Habitat for Humanity!  We helped at their first donation drive in March & they specifically asked for our volunteers again for this event.  This one is going to be held at a church parking lot in Castle Rock. We can coordinate car pooling if needed. We will be doing things such as helping to direct traffic\, handing out donation information\, we may do some lifting of donations (they will have some trucks & guys there so they are doing the heavy lifting)\, and will be thanking the donors as they leave!  Customers at the ReStores\, who will benefit from the Donation Drive\, shop for household items at huge discounts.  These items are really needed by families especially this year when many families are shorter on funds.  All profits support Habitat for Humanity’s home ownership program for low-income families.  They say “every purchase builds homes and hope”!  Please sign up soon for this one as we will be given Habitat for Humanity t-shirts and they need to know our shirt sizes!

DESCRIPTION:Cafe 180 benefiting those who can’t pay for their meals\, Sat. June 19\, 11:00–1PM\,( This event is now on Waiting List status. If you sign up you will receive the 2 automated registration notices but will only be contacted if we have a volunteer cancellation.) 5 Volunteers are needed to serve customers\, help prepare food\, and help with a little clean up!  This cafe has been closed during the pandemic but now finally reopened on June 1st!  Cafe 180’s mission is to reduce hunger in the community by providing meals to everyone\, regardless of their ability to pay.  Not only do they serve up delicious food\, they serve up respect\, dignity & self sufficiency.  We helped them a few times and really enjoyed the experience.  Plus we each had a great meal when we completed our shift!  They say:  “we’ve all relied on the kindness of others at certain times in our lives… For those who have enough\, it’s a chance to eat well and do well. For those who are struggling\, it’s a chance to eat in a dignified manner.  We’re not about hand outs.  We’re about giving people a hand up…”  Volunteers need to wear comfortable shoes & anyone with long hair needs to have it pulled back.  The group will have cafe’ shirts to wear when they get there. The location for the event is near Hampden/Broadway.   What a great opportunity to help as they get going again after the pandemic!

SUMMARY:Ft. Logan National Cemetery Flowers with Victory for Veterans Foundation!
DESCRIPTION:Ft. Logan National Cemetery Flowers with the Victory for Veterans Foundation\, Mon. May 31\, 8AM-approx.10AM\, 10 Volunteers are needed. (This event is now on Waiting List status.  If you register you will receive a confirmation but will only be contacted if we have a volunteer cancellation.) We will be helping them place a flower on  every grave at Ft. Logan National Cemetery.  This organization serves veterans & their families needs\, one at a time.  Their Vision is Absolute Zero!- zero suicides\, zero homeless\, zero jobless\, zero uncared for\, & zero feeling alone & abandoned.  The Memorial Day event is part of a larger mission which also includes putting flowers on the graves in Arlington National Cemetery\, organized by the Memorial Day Flowers Foundation. This year they have been a little short on cash for the flowers due to COVID.  There is a link for a donation if you would like to do so that will be given to you by your Event Captain or the SVGD Volunteer Events Coordinator if you request it.  Also\, since they aren’t sure they will have enough roses you are welcome to bring some roses if you’d like to have more than the dozen they are handing out so you can help cover more graves.  This is a beautiful event that really supports veterans and military families on Memorial Day!

SUMMARY:Serving Dinner at The Crossing transitional shelter!
DESCRIPTION:Serving Dinner at The Crossing transitional shelter\, Thurs. May 20\, 4:45-7:15PM\, 4 volunteers are needed. Many of our volunteers request this event because they enjoy it and feel that it is such a worthwhile organization.  The Crossing is a transitional facility between the homeless shelter and getting back into a home.  The residents are working and saving up for a place to live.  It is drug & alcohol free.  Men\, women & children reside there.  It provides a great service as people work to get back on their feet. Our volunteers will help in the buffet line and may help with some of the meal bags for those who come back from work after dinner time.  After we serve dinner we will have an opportunity to eat as a group and also enjoy the meal. They specifically contacted us to help as they are very short on volunteers!  This facility is also trying to keep everything safe for volunteers during the pandemic.  Each volunteer should wear a mask.  Gloves will be provided.  We will be behind the counter & plexi-glass when serving food and there are sinks for handwashing and sanitizer. During this pandemic time\, they are using disposable dishes and utensils\, most of the residents then eat in their rooms instead of the dining room and they have an extra table in front of the food line to keep everyone 6 ft. apart.

DESCRIPTION:Serving Dinner at the Delores Project Women’s Safehouse\, Wed. May 12th\, 5:45-7:45PM\, 4 Volunteers minimally are needed. The Delores Project has made adjustments due to the pandemic to make us safe as well as the residents safe.  The kitchen and dining room are cleaned before and after each meal.  The dining room is arranged for social distancing and they only have a capacity of 32 and do regular COVID testing.  We will be wearing masks & will be provided disposable gloves.  Our group will just be in the kitchen and will be eating there.  The food is provided\, we just need to heat it up and arrange it for the residents as they come through.  We will be serving the food but will be in the kitchen area so will not be touching the residents.   So many of our volunteers have been requesting this event!  We have assisted this women’s safe shelter several times and they have asked us back as we have fantastic groups of volunteers. The shelter is in West Denver. This is a confidential location that is given out to the volunteers after registering due to the nature of the facility.  Both male & female volunteers are welcome to assist at this event.

DESCRIPTION:      Spring Plant Sale at the Denver Botanic Gardens\, Sat.\, May 8th. 5 volunteers are needed. (This event is now on Waiting List status.  If you sign up you will receive the automated registration responses but will only be contacted if we have a volunteer cancellation.) The shift they proposed was very long so they’ve worked with us to be a little flexible as long as we have 5 volunteers there at all times. You can sign up for either  2-8:30PM (might get done earlier at 7:30 or 8PM)\, 2-5:30PM or 5-8:30PM. When you register you will receive an automated response from me.  Please just reply right away and let me know what works as far as a shift time for you.  They really need our help so I’ll be working to be sure we have enough volunteers for them so please sign up soon so I can coordinate the shift members.  They are being COVID safe so weren’t able to use us as volunteers this past year even though I was asking about the Pumpkin Patch\, etc.  It’s great to be invited back to help again.  In order to keep safety protocol they are having people virtually order the plants that they want.  We will actually be on the roof of the parking garage across the street from the Botanic Gardens!  People will drive up & we will see their order and then pick it up from the group of orders we have there\, give it to them\, and they’ll drive on.  It sounds like a unique and fun experience!

SUMMARY:Serving Dinner at The Denver Rescue Mission!
DESCRIPTION:Serving Dinner at The Denver Rescue Mission\, Thurs.\, April 29th\, 4:15-6:45PM\, 5 volunteers will be needed.  The Denver Rescue Mission was the last event we did in March of 2020 before COVID shut down our events for months.  They have adjusted for COVID safety and are now serving dinner to about 3 times as many men as before!  This has always been one of our volunteers’ favorite events where they feel they are really contributing to the community.  I’m glad we can start doing this safely again!  The Denver Rescue Mission is located in Downtown Denver but they do have a couple parking lots where we can assist.  They presently are serving up to 2000 meals daily!  The last time we were there we helped serve 761 meals. Since this event is a little earlier in the day I know it interferes with some peoples work schedules & I need to promote it a little longer.  Please sign up soon if you can help so I know we have enough volunteers!

If you sign up you will receive a registration response but will only be contacted if we have a volunteer cancellation.) We had a great time helping them start their new Saturday program in January!  We are going to continue helping them occasionally as they get this bi-monthly event going. The Action Center normally provides food to about 60 low-income people daily. They did that during the week days.  During the COVID-19 crisis days the number has gone up to around 200 so they started the Saturday program!    We do a variety of activities such as packing boxes\, sorting food\, loading food into cars\, etc. They are very careful to be sure the volunteers are safe during this pandemic. We will be working in small groups of volunteers in open areas to accommodate social distancing.  Everyone is required to wear a mask\, disposable gloves will be provided\, they have temperature check stations\, hand sanitizer\, etc.  This is a great way to help our community when so many individuals and families are short on food these days!  The event will be in Lakewood.

DESCRIPTION:Serving Dinner at The Crossing transitional shelter\,Thurs. April 1\, 4:45-7:15PM\, 5 volunteers are needed. We then do a few minutes of clean up and straightening in the dining room. During this pandemic time\, they are using disposable dishes and utensils and most residents then eat in their rooms instead of the dining room and they have an extra table in front of the food line to keep everyone 6 ft. apart.

If you register you will receive an automated response acknowledging your registration but will only be contacted if there is a volunteer cancellation.)  \nThe Delores Project has made adjustments due to the pandemic to make us safe as well as the residents safe.

Many of our volunteers request this event because they enjoy it and feel that it is such a worthwhile organization.  The Crossing is a transitional facility between the homeless shelter and getting back into a home.  The residents are working and saving up for a place to live.  It is drug & alcohol free.  Men\, women & families reside there.  It provides a great service as people work to get back on their feet. Our volunteers will help in the buffet line and may help with some of the meal bags for those who come back from work after dinner time.  After we serve dinner you will have an opportunity to put some food in a box if you’d like to bring it home for your own dinner.  We do a few minutes of clean up and straightening in the dining room. They specifically contacted us to help as they are very short on volunteers this Fall!  This facility is also trying to keep everything safe for volunteers during the pandemic.  Each volunteer should wear a mask.  Gloves will be provided.  We will be behind the counter & plexi-glass when serving food plus they have tables set in front of the serving area to insure our social distance.  I was so impressed by how safe it was when we went there in November.  They have switched to disposable serving dishes so that all residents can take their meals back to their rooms instead of eating in a group in the dining room.  We still get to interact with them as they go socially distanced through the serving line. This should be a great opportunity to help the community in the  Holiday Season as we end 2020!
